I think we can all agree that 2020 was a mixed bag. One filled with some great things…and a lot of not-so-great things.
For those of us who live in the world of video, one welcome surprise that 2020 brought was a host of amazing new cameras from several of the big manufacturers.
The Sony A7S III, the RED Komodo, the Canon R5…those are just a few of the new toys that were introduced last year, each of them with groundbreaking specs and features.
At Richter Productions, we were like kids in a candy store. So many fantastic new filmmaking tools to choose from! Our Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro had served us well on many a shoot…but it was time for some new gear that would enable us to continue creating the highest quality products for our clients, well into the future.
So after much deliberation (and testing some of the incredible cameras on offer), we settled on this beauty (pictured above). This is the Canon C70. A full-featured, dedicated cinema camera that has all of the bells and whistles you’d expect in a professional cinema camera…but packed into a DSLR-shaped body.
The C70 has a brand new 4K sensor with over 16 stops of dynamic range, a large number of professional I/O ports (including dual XLR inputs, HDMI, and timecode), exposure tools like waveform and false color, and internal ND filters that go up to 10 stops of neutral density, for shooting outside in harsh lighting conditions.
Best of all, the C70 fits all of this functionality into a package that’s less than half the size of our URSA Mini Pro…making it the ideal camera for run-and-gun shooting situations that also call for professional image quality.
2020 wasn’t easy for many people, but there were some bright spots. For Richter Productions, our purchase of the C70 was one of those bright spots…because we know it will translate into even more impressive projects, and even happier clients.
Happy New Gear!
